Anaesthesia Follow-up Reports

Background

After an initial round of anaesthesia reviews to all territorial NHS boards and one special health board (Golden Jubilee National Hospital) in 2005 to assess performance against the Clinical Standards for Anaesthesia - Care Before, During and After Anaesthesia (2003), a national overview and local reports were published in September 2005. In 2007, further local reports were published following peer review visits to hospitals where anaesthesia is provided in the independent healthcare sector.

Follow-up review programme

In February 2009, the anaesthesia project group was reconvened to consider an appropriate follow-up review methodology and process. It was agreed to conduct a follow-up review for all territorial NHS boards and one special health board (Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Clydebank) as well as seven hospitals in the independent healthcare sector. The follow-up reviews focus on the following areas:

  • 31 core criteria applicable to all of the above NHS boards and hospitals; these were based on the recommendations and challenges in the anaesthesia national overview (2005).
  • 10 additional criteria to be assessed only if not met during the previous review.

The follow-up review programme is taking place between October 2009 and March 2010 in the form of a table-top exercise using panels of key representational professionals and public partners. Each review panel assesses performance using the categories ‘met’, ‘not met’ and ‘not met (insufficient evidence)’. A final category ‘not applicable’ is used where a standard and/or criterion does not apply to the NHS board/independent hospital under review.
